D6 tool steel is typically supplied instead of D3, been a tool steel its utilises a high carbon high chromium makeup. D6 is air hardening and has great wear resistance properties after heat treatment, due to this D6 is excellent at holding and edge.

D6 has a much higher carbon content than D2 this gives it superior wear resistance to that of D2 however this also means its more brittle. As with D2 the chromium content gives a resistance to corrosion.

D6 is often used in the production of knives, punches, mandrels etc.
